Strong communities don’t just happen — they are built through care, investment and vision.

The Walter Scott Family Foundation advances community well-being across Nebraska by supporting projects that strengthen neighborhoods and create spaces where people can connect and grow.

Our approach is rooted in long-term partnership. We work alongside civic leaders, nonprofits and institutions to ensure that every investment has a lasting impact — helping communities thrive today while building resilience that will last into the future.

More than one-third of the Foundation’s annual giving supports community advancement. Our investments help strengthen the fabric of communities statewide.

How we create impact.

Community betterment.

We invest in projects that strengthen the places where people live, work and gather. From revitalizing public spaces to supporting cultural and civic institutions, these efforts create vibrant, connected communities that enhance quality of life for everyone.

Human services.

Thriving communities depend on meeting basic needs. We partner with nonprofits and civic organizations that provide critical services such as housing, food security and health support — ensuring every individual has the opportunity to live with dignity and stability.

Public safety.

Safe communities are strong communities. Through programs like the Jack Lewis Safety Fund, we help small towns and local partners make essential improvements in safety and emergency response, so every community can feel secure and prepared for the future.

Transforming our communities through
signature investments in the future.

Across Nebraska, the Walter Scott Family Foundation supports cornerstone projects that strengthen communities, improve lives and create spaces that bring people together.

The Suzanne & Walter Scott African Grasslands exhibit.

Project type: Capital project support
Year completed: 2016

When the Walter Scott Family Foundation partnered with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium on the African Grasslands exhibit, it marked the largest project in the zoo’s history. Spanning 28 acres and completed in two phases, the exhibit transformed the eastern side of the zoo into a sweeping, naturalistic landscape. The project included 25 new structures and a 30,000-square-foot Elephant Family Quarters, one of the largest in North America.

The Scott African Grasslands is now a community treasure. It draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, creates educational opportunities for students and families and strengthens Omaha’s reputation as a world-class destination.

Year completed: 2017

The Walter Scott Family Foundation provided support for the construction of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. This investment expanded the University of Nebraska Medicine’s capacity for cancer research and treatment, advancing lifesaving innovation while improving access to comprehensive care for patients across the region. As one of the most advanced cancer centers in the Midwest, the facility strengthens Omaha’s position as a hub for cutting-edge medical discovery and compassionate community care.

Revitalizing Omaha’s RiverFront

Project type: Capital project support
Year completed: 2023

The Walter Scott Family Foundation provided support for the Omaha RiverFront project, a public-private partnership coordinated through the Downtown Riverfront Trust. This contribution helped transform the city’s riverfront into a cohesive public space integrating three parks – Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis & Clark Landing – which in turn spurred further development in downtown Omaha with new restaurants and retail space, creating a more dynamic and inviting experience.
