The Suzanne & Walter Scott African Grasslands exhibit.

Year completed: 2016
When the Walter Scott Family Foundation partnered with Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium on the African Grasslands exhibit, it marked the largest project in the zoo’s history. Spanning 28 acres and completed in two phases, the exhibit transformed the eastern side of the zoo into a sweeping, naturalistic landscape. The project included 25 new structures and a 30,000-square-foot Elephant Family Quarters, one of the largest in North America.
The Scott African Grasslands is now a community treasure. It draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, creates educational opportunities for students and families and strengthens Omaha’s reputation as a world-class destination.
The Suzanne & Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower.

Year completed: 2017
The Walter Scott Family Foundation provided support for the construction of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. This investment expanded the University of Nebraska Medicine’s capacity for cancer research and treatment, advancing lifesaving innovation while improving access to comprehensive care for patients across the region. As one of the most advanced cancer centers in the Midwest, the facility strengthens Omaha’s position as a hub for cutting-edge medical discovery and compassionate community care.
Revitalizing Omaha’s RiverFront
Project type: Capital project support
Year completed: 2023
The Walter Scott Family Foundation provided support for the Omaha RiverFront project, a public-private partnership coordinated through the Downtown Riverfront Trust. This contribution helped transform the city’s riverfront into a cohesive public space integrating three parks – Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America Park and Lewis & Clark Landing – which in turn spurred further development in downtown Omaha with new restaurants and retail space, creating a more dynamic and inviting experience.
Ongoing programs and grant opportunities.
The Omaha Award.
This grant program supports nonprofits in the Omaha metro helping people meet food, shelter, health and clothing/personal care needs. Eligible organizations can request a maximum grant of up to $75,000 annually.
Jack Lewis Safety Fund.
This fund awards grants to police, fire and EMS agencies serving Nebraska and southwest Iowa communities with 5,000 or less residents. Eligible organizations can request up to $50,000 for equipment, personal protection gear and training.
Advancing Nebraska Communities.
Launched in 2024, this ongoing grant program supports projects that enhance public gathering spaces like parks, libraries, trails and community centers across the state. Eligible organizations can request up to $250,000 per project.
